NephroCare Excellence Programme

NephroCare´s Excellence System is a holistic system of management instruments that supports our operating clinics worldwide to implement NephroCare´s vision in an efficient and systematic way.

The system entails, for example, accurately measuring treatment quality based on our clinical database, standardisation and efficiency enhancements to the clinical infrastructure as well as optimisation of dialysis treatment outcomes. The combination of our vision with our comprehensive system of management instruments is what we call the NephroCare Excellence System.

NephroCare’s clinical management system

No improvement without data. EuCliD®, NephroCare’s proprietary clinical management system provides comprehensive information of each dialysis treatment and patient, allowing the medical staff in each NephroCare centre to take the right decisions to improve the treatment for each individual patient.

EuCliD® is running in 774 dialysis centres all around the region of EMEALA – Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin America that treat around 82,000 dialysis patients.

EuCliD® provides the data for the regular quality review in NephroCare dialysis centres, as well as the NephroCare Balanced Scorecard and Medical Patient Review Reports.

NephroCare Balanced Scorecard

In order to provide the staff of each dialysis centre, as well as management with a quick view of the centre’s performance, a Balanced Scorecard was created to measure the achievement of performance targets. It serves to guide continuous improvement at all organisational levels. From the patient perspective, the most important objective is improving quality of life at Fresenius Medical Care’s dialysis centres. Specific performance measures include indicators of dialysis process performance and treatment outcomes.

Medical Patient Review Reports

Medical and Nursing Patient Review reports are generated directly at clinic level from EuCliD®. They allow the medical staff to perform a detailed evaluation of the dialysis patients and their uraemic comorbidities in a holistic approach to haemodialysis performances, but also enable them to run analysis over a group of patients or centres, contributing in this way to the identification of general problems and thus the adoption of corrective actions.

Healthcare Services Quality Management System (HS-QMS)

The HS-QMS is implemented in our dialysis clinics to assure the provision of high quality dialysis care. Based on the international quality standard ISO 9001, sectorial guidelines and internal experts´ knowledge, it ensures that the internal and external quality requirements of healthcare delivery are met.

To achieve the appropriate integration of these quality requirements into our structured processes, we focus on the following principles:

  • Providing patients with best treatment options according to their needs
  • Use of high-quality products, pharmaceuticals and procedures in our clinics, continuously refined by our research and development team
  • Providing our patients comprehensive therapy and medical advice from qualified, highly motivated staff
  • Provision of a safe environment for both patients and employees in our dialysis centres
  • Ongoing improvement of our performance and efficiency levels

A core element of our quality management system consists of corporate directives specifying key requirements for the processes in our NephroCare organisation, e.g. by setting standards for hygiene and infection control, good dialysis care, water, concentrate and dialysis fluid for haemodialysis and related therapies.

Continuous Improvement Process

The continuous improvement process in NephroCare is based on three elements:

  1. The standardisation of working processes documented in the company’s integrated management system (quality system);
  2. The regular review of performance (i.e. medical outcome, process indicators, cost, organisational issues and patient satisfaction) by a multi-disciplinary team in each NephroCare centre consisting of the medical and nursing staff, as well as management, as well as by the regional and country management;
  3. The initiative of each staff member to identify and propose improvement actions that, once validated, become part of the standard;

This continuous improvement process is supported by management tools, such as EuCliD® Nursing and Medical Patient Review Reports and the NephroCare Balanced Scorecard amongst others, but also through training of the staff in organisational and leadership skills.
